I play serpent (one of Harding's last) in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. There are a few players in the area...(VA, NC, SC, DC) that I know. Any chance of having a Serpent gathering on this side of the pond? I know a great place to do it-with nice old buildings to play in... _________________ J. Gabriel Stone |

First of all, this is a great idea. I know there is an early brass festival in Aug. in South Carolina, but I am not sure how much serpent activity will be there. Colonial Williamsburg would be a nice place to meet. You might have to pick out a date a year in advance for everyone to clear their calendars. Also, since the Serpentarium in England is this year and is held once every other year, it might be good to plan a U.S serpent gathering with an offset schedule.
It also occurred to me Gabe, if your gig in CW is your primary source of income, you may be one of the only profession serpent players in the world. Have you ever thought about that? |

I have put out requests in past serpent newsletters to see if there was enough interest for a serpent clinic in the States. I received absolutely no positive replies. After England the USA has more serpent players than anywhere, but they don't seem to have much interest in travelling or incurring expense. The 1989 festival in South Carolina was the last time it has happened here, and that might not have happened if it were not in part a warm up excercise for the really big show in England the following year (400th Birthday of the serpent). There have been tiny serpent gatherings at the Early Brass Festivals most years, but even last year there were only two players present - John Weber and myself - the same two (and only two) Americans who go to the Serpentariums in England.
I know that the players in Virginia get together once or twice a year and have lots of fun doing it. I would like to think that we can muster enough enthusiasm to pull something off on a national level. I agree with Russ that it should not be in the same year as the biennial Serpentariums in England.
I encourage forum readers to vote with their comments, to see how many interested folks we can get on board... _________________ Paul Schmidt

| I am interested. Especially if it is held on the East coast, and when school is out for the summer. Hey, it's not summer yet this year! |

I will begin looking at our venue possibilities, and talking with the College of William and Mary early music folks as well as our own in CW. As many of you know, this year is our (Virginia-especially the Colonial triangle) 400th birthday. There are events going on like crazy this and the next year. It's good times for early musicians in Virginia! _________________ J. Gabriel Stone |

I would love to have a Serpent Weekend (or something like that), and am happy to organize.
There are two serpentists in NC and two in SE virginia that are on the forum. With a little work I know I can find a couple others that aren't online. We could at least have a quartet weekend!
Do we want to put on a public concert, or just play for ourselves? Also, if you've never been here we have Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown. All within a few miles-for you history buffs...hard to imaging serpentists liking history, eh!!! As well as Busch Gardens Theme park and beaches and rivers and etc....good for a family vacation.
I'll go over my summer calendar and make a couple of proposed weekends. _________________ J. Gabriel Stone |

You have my attention. I'd be interested, though I'd be there with that new-fangled "ophicleide" they keep talking about...

Sorry to take so long to get my availability checked. I have to work around summer band rehearsals as well as my playing in Williamsburg.
How about the weekend of either July 12-13 or July 19-20. It'll be after the Independance day holiday, which is best for me.
Anyone interested please post a reply here so that we can get things started. I have a great rehearsal space (my band room) and a venue for informal performance (tavern in Colonial Williamsburg). I can set up an itenerary if I know what people are interested in doing-other than playing. Also I can help with hotels if needed. I've only got couch space at my place, but it's available as well.

That's Great Paul, anyone else out there think they can make it. I'll solidify dates let's say by thursday June 19 to give other folks time to chime in.
If it's just two, I've got the Paris Conservatory Method, we can play duets!

Too bad...I would have liked to attend your gathering, but it falls in between two other trips I have going the week before and the week after, and I can't afford another trip during that in-between weekend. Assuming your event is a success, hopefully another attempt can be made in the future with more warning and more publicity, so it can rival the Serpentariums in England.... _________________ Paul Schmidt
